A Bike of a Different Color. . .
Monday, February 23, 2009
A Race a Plenty.
Our very own shop manager, Jeff, took 1st place in his age group and 14th overall. KUDOS!
With all this friendly competition and awesome bicycles to gawk at there was one disturbing occurance: cheating. Out on the cycling course several riders were guilty of drafting and "blocking" others. In a race against the clock these tactics are clearly forbidden. Racers were reminded of this at the start line.
When you do your first race, 50th triathlon or 500th century rally, respect the organisers and other participants and play by the rules. Everybody wants a fair competition and nobody likes a cheater. Make your accomplishments count.

Group rides
Bikes of all sizes, jerseys of a million different colors.
Enzymes flowing while legs are churning.
The collective ambiance of a group ride or event is hard to accuratley describe.
Besides our weekly Saturday morning road rides there are literally HUNDREDS of events coming up in the next few months. North Texas has all sorts of charity cruises, 100 mile rallies, amateur races and mountain bike bonanzas to choose from.
We've listed everything we could find here for your convenience. Check back as spring approaches. We'll list more and more as the weeks go by.

3 LEGGED STOOL.
3 IMPORTANT PARTS OT TRAINING:
- REST
- NUTRITION
- MILES
Everyone can put in millions of miles. Sprinting for the city limits and doing endless hill repeats. This aerobic base is an important part of becoming stronger. Getting a base into the legs will allow a rider to give burts of effort in intense situations and still maintain a solid overall pace. Yet all the group rides and solo battles against the wind will count for nothing if the other two aspects of training are neglected.
Rest is not as easy as it sounds. I once read an advice column in Bicycling Magazine that said "Sit when you don't have to stand, lay down and stretch when you aren't forced to sit." This couldn't be more true. When you can take it easy, you should. A nightly 8 hours is essential. More is better. Rest is often overlooked because of busy schedules. Sleep is our body's way to replenish, refresh and of course, build that all important muscle.
Nutrition goes hand in hand with rest. We must have enough calories for the rides themselves. Before and after, the proper antioxidants, complex carbs and protein account for all that we are. Fruits and vegetables cannot be stressed enough. Natural energy boosters. Also nuts, berries and beans are extemely helpful to build muscle and for recovery purposes.
Nobody (except Armstrong) has a big enough food budget to get everything needed from the grocery store. Here at the bike shop we've got all sorts of supplements for muscle building and recovery. Gels, bars, and mixes for your bottles. Come in and check out our selection.

Is the wind a worry?
The main reason people don't ride when temperatures drop and the wind is howling is because well...it's not exactly easy to get geared up and out the door. Booties, ear band, tights- don't forget extra core warmth.
Now you can score an awesome outer layer, without breaking the bank. Check out our Canari, Specialized, Nike (and Nike 10/2) wind breakers, all at incredible prices.
Questions? Just call 972.293.3100 or swing by today.
We're off hwy 67 exit 408 (crossroad 1382) - next to Kohls.
